It was so stinkin' chilly this morning!! I thought I'd be fine in just a long sleeve and gloves ... I was cold the whole time. What happened to my perfect weather???

***** late afternoon thru evening *****

I AM SUCH AN IDIOT!!!

I tried to make this special icepack thingamagigger in a medical latex glove. Anyway ... it had rubbing alcohol and water frozen in it. I guess the latex glove wasn't a good idea because somehow it gave me this GIANT chemical burn!! It stung when I put it on, but I figured it was just colder than I was used to. After about 7 minutes I was in dire pain, I took it off and I had welt like things all over. It's been about 4 hours now and it still kills!! I flushed it as well as I could, put some first-aid burn stuff on it, but it is still super HOT to the touch!! What an idiot!!

(Stink ... I tried to put a picture in here, but I can't figure out how!!)

There I go. Can't see it very well. But atleast I figured a way to get the

stupid knee burn on here!!

Great miles- I am feeling your temperature pain. It was down right cold this morning.

From Camille on Oct 10, 2008 at 12:25:53

Your prefect weather came to Arizona, and we truly appreciate it! Great mileage!

From JeffC on Oct 10, 2008 at 15:46:01

Yes, thank you for sending your perfect weather down here to Las Vegas as well. Fall is absolutely the best time in Vegas. I hope you find a way to stay warm up there in the artic. Great run by the way.

From Teena on Oct 10, 2008 at 23:44:09

Marion -- Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the cold!! Stink!!

Camille -- Any chance you'd be willing to send it back?

Jeff -- I'm so jealous!! I might have to run quite a bit on the treadmill if my asthma doesn't behave.

From JulieC on Oct 10, 2008 at 23:51:57

Did you take a benadryl or did the reaction go away? Latex is a common allergen. You could also try steroid cream but benadryl would work best.

From JulieC on Oct 10, 2008 at 23:53:35

Oh and avoid all latex from now on, especially band-aids, if they don't say latex free they have latex.

From Teena on Oct 11, 2008 at 00:04:48

Julie, I don't think it has anything to do with the latex since I have used those gloves several times with just ice in them ... never had a reaction. I think it must have something to do with the rubbing alcohol seeping through ... or something. It definitely feels like a chemical burn. But I could be completely wrong.

It's not going away. It's been 6 hours now. I'll see what it looks and feels like tomorrow!! Stupid Stupid Stupid me!!!

From walter on Oct 11, 2008 at 00:42:24

ouch teena! That really hurts! You need to get the cryo cuff my friend! lol Hey did you go to Cafe Rio tonight? I thought I saw you but was too shy to ask. Walter too shy? whatever. (Kelli) I saved myself.

From Teena on Oct 11, 2008 at 01:37:09

Walter --

Nope, not at Cafe Rio tonight (although I LOVE Cafe Rio). That would have been sweet to ask if it was me and be denied!! I'm assuming that the gal you saw must have looked as if she was totally cool!! :)

What did you order?

From Teena on Oct 11, 2008 at 01:38:24

Oh yeah ... I think you are right ... definitely time to order the cryo cuff!!

From Teena on Oct 11, 2008 at 01:41:39

Julie -- could an allergic reaction feel like a burn?? Is it possible that I would only be allergic to latex under certain conditions (like when it has rubbing alcohol in/on it)?

I'm still baffled by what in the world happened. Going on 8 hours now ... I keep putting on this first-aid burn gel, it seems to be helping, but it is definitely still there and it stings big time!

From montelepsy on Oct 11, 2008 at 05:28:21

What was the purpose of the alcohol?

Good news, you found out on your knee instead of someplace worse! It's a good thing you didn't have a face-ache.

From Teena on Oct 11, 2008 at 09:19:19

That's exactly what my husband said!! (He still doesn't understand why I didn't take it off immediately when it began to hurt ... neither do I!! Stupid!! Stupid!! Stupid!!)

I'm just headed out to run right now ... It's been about 14 hours since the reaction and it's still red, stings and is hot to the touch (it does seem to be improving some though)!! Crazy ... I hope it doesn't affect the run.

I mixed the alcohol with the water before I froze the whole thing to make the slushy type of icepacks that Marion makes (but she uses freezer ziploc bags and doubles them up).

From walter on Oct 11, 2008 at 10:42:24

Yeah, im glad I didnt ask her now. She did look like a Teena though! I got the Pork Barbacoa Burrito. Smothered! Soo good!

Your photo looks like something from a first aid shot. Sort of one of those photos they show you in health class. lol

From Teena on Oct 11, 2008 at 12:07:57

Walter --

When you say "look[ed] like a Teena," once again I am assuming that you mean totally cool, fun, and awesome!! :)

Thought my knee would look a lot better this morning -- yikes ... I might have a permenant Gorbachev mark on my knee!! I'm picking up a Donjoy Iceman today (not sure if it will work as well as a cryo cuff, but I will give it a try). If it doesn't do the trick I will take your advice and order the cuff.

Glad you enjoyed Powell. What's your next race?

From JulieC on Oct 11, 2008 at 13:19:04

Really try benadryl(antihistamine) or benadryl cream. You will be sleepy with the pill or it may make you hyper. I think you need an antihistamine. The combination of latex and alcohol probably made the latex allergy shine thru. I was a nurse for 5 years before I reacted to the latex gloves. Now we are latex-free at our hospital. It takes just one more exposure to cause the reaction. You are describing with the burning and redness what I get when I put on a bandaid or tape. I think you will find relief with benadryl though it may take longer now that it has been longer in your system. Just 25 mg should be okay, some people can take 50 with an alleric reaction no problem but would hate for you to be sleepy and/or hyper. If you take unisom I believe it has the same ingredient of diphenhydramine that is in benadryl. You also get a dry mouth. So you will drink a lot.

From walter on Oct 11, 2008 at 13:30:01

Yes Teena, of course I meant fun, awesome cool and a looker! lol

I think Gorby would be a good nick name for you! Holy crap now thats funny!

My next race will be a 5k or something like that around Thanksgiving if I can heal in time. I have to have a hernia operation then Ill concentrate on getting with it. I want to do R&R Arizona in Jan. and the Del Sol Relay in Feb. and then Im signed up for Moab half and then Boston. How bout yourself gorby?

From JeffC on Oct 11, 2008 at 14:42:24

Dang Teena, that totally stinks! I hope that thing heals up. Keep us posted.

From Smooth on Oct 11, 2008 at 15:51:27

Does your gorby itch or just burn? Anti-histamine helps with the itch not the burn. For chemical burn, water flushes and anesthetic cream helps. Either case, your chicken leg will be back to its speedy and gorgeous (not gorby) state in couple of days. Yep, no worries, you'll be "itching" or have a "burning" desire to train for Boston in no time.

From walter on Oct 11, 2008 at 16:11:34

Oh my sweet goodness, that is too funny!

From Teena on Oct 11, 2008 at 16:52:00

Julie --

I took some benadryl and singulair last night. I'm not quite sure if it helped or not. It wouldn't be surprising to find out that I have yet developed another allergy (I get monthly allergy shots). I'll stay on the antihistamines and see if it helps. Thanks for the info.

Walter --

I've been called a lot of things, but never Gorby!! That'll take some getting used to - hmmm, must be some way to spice it up! :)

So ... you're getting cut open, huh? That stinks!! Glad you are getting it taken care of though. How much pain were you running in? How much time did the doc say it would take to heal?

The only races I am committed to right now are the Snow Canyon Half in 4 weeks, and Boston. I'll have to throw some more in the mix. Gorby?!?!?! Are you sure???? :)

Jeff --

I'm such a fool!! It still stings like mad. Some Las Vegas sunshine could take care of it though!! It's getting so chilly. I need to go check out your blog right now and see what you're up to!

Smooth --

My sweetest soul sista' -- you make me laugh!! My "gorby" does not itch ... it just burns!! It now has a dark line outline around it (almost looks like a red water stain, if that makes sense). It was hard to sleep because anytime it was touched it felt like it was on fire! Burn baby Burn!! (I have been flushing it often ... I think that helps.) Btw ... sure do love you!! How are you feeling?

From walter on Oct 11, 2008 at 17:07:41

Yeah gorby is a quirky name. when smooth called your ouchy gorby it sounds more like a venerial disease. Crap I keep laughing about it. funny. I heard about the snow canyon half and it sounds like a good race. Ill have to see how I feel. The doc said it would take 6 weeks to recover but it honestly doesnt hurt when I run. Ill have to see how it goes.

From Teena on Oct 11, 2008 at 17:13:35

I'm still laughing about Smooth's comment as well. "Does your gorby itch or burn??" That one needs to go down in the books for sure!! :)

From walter on Oct 11, 2008 at 17:18:24

Lets hope it not Gonorrhea! lol Oh man, that just does it for me! I need to go the the bathroom before i pee myself laughing!

From Teena on Oct 11, 2008 at 17:26:27

Walter --

Smooth is the nicest, sweetest, most amazing woman you could ever meet ... I am CERTAIN that she did not mean "gonorrhea."

Only you!!!!

(btw, hope you made it in time)

From walter on Oct 11, 2008 at 17:54:27

I did make it in time! lol Im the sicko here! Im sure she is a great person. Leave it to me to say how it is. Ill take full responsibility for my perverseness. lol carry on Smooth! carry on.

From Teena on Oct 11, 2008 at 19:55:21

Atleast you are accountable for your actions -- that's gotta count for something! :)

From walter on Oct 11, 2008 at 20:08:36

oh of coarse! Ill take the heat as long as my comments dont get me kicked off of here! lol

From Kelli on Oct 12, 2008 at 17:26:51

OUCH!!!

From Teena on Oct 12, 2008 at 20:27:20

Walter --

Glad you can take the heat!!

Kelli --

It's actually looking and feeling a whole lot better today!! I definitely won't be doing that again. Stupid, stupid, stupid. (Did I mention that it was completely stupid on my part?)

From Kelli on Oct 12, 2008 at 20:28:56

I think you did mention that it was stupid. Stupidity hurts sometimes, and this is coming from the queen of stupid!

From walter on Oct 12, 2008 at 22:44:18
